Help us provide these important services to all the children at Chaparral!

Dear Chaparral Families:

As we all know, this is an extremely dark time for education in California. Bare bones budgets have created the need for schools to pare back pretty much anything but the basics.  It’s been a heart-wrenching experience for our teachers and staff who have struggled with the idea of how to choose what a student is and is not going to get in their education.

Here at Chaparral, we are fortunate to have a support system of parents who refuse to believe that learning should stop with reading, writing and arithmetic. Through the school’s Foundation and PTA we have kept art and physical education instruction alive at Chaparral, but now it’s time to take it a step further.

Principal Zwibel recently announced that music and counseling services were coming back to our school with the support of money raised through the Chaparral Educational Foundation. We started the year without these programs, as they were cut due to the budget shortfall, but the foundation’s board felt compelled to bring them back and here’s why:

Studies have linked music education as a positive influence on the intelligence of a child - even Albert Einstein credited his own genius to playing the violin. In bringing back music education, we are not only enriching the lives of every student, we are giving them yet one more way in which they can excel. No matter how much we stress the 3Rs, some kids are better suited to the arts. Let’s
give them a chance to find their strength and build their confidence – that opportunity may be all they need to turn around their entire learning experience.

Every child at Chaparral is impacted by having a counselor on campus. It’s because of our counselor that we’ve had success in educating students on the importance of friendships and how to deal with (and not fall into the cycle of) bullying. Our counselor has provided individual help, mediated friendship problems and provided counseling groups for students struggling with a shared problem. By mitigating and dealing with the emotional issues, we can improve the learning environment for the child in need and the children all around them.

Sustaining these two important services will come at the price of roughly $40 per student per year. The Foundation has promised to cover the cost for the current school year, but we can’t do this without your help.

The Foundation is asking you to consider underwriting this cost for your child and make certain that Chaparral continues to provide social, emotional and creative outlets for our students. Each child is gifted in some way. Let’s give them the chance to have a well-rounded educational experience that will give them a chance to explore their gifts and excel in life.

Warm Regards,
Your 2009-2010 Chaparral Educational Foundation Board
